IMG_3582OdySea Aquarium near McCormick Ranch opened fall of 2016 with much anticipation! It’s the largest aquarium in the Southwest and can hold more than 10,000 visitors daily. The privately-owned, for-profit aquarium spans 200,000 square feet in the ‘OdySea in the Deser’t entertainment complex adjacent to the Butterfly Wonderland at Loop 101 and Via de Ventura in Scottsdale. It is one of the largest aquariums in the US. The construction cost more than $100 million and the attraction is larger than other major aquariums in Seattle, San Francisco and New Orleans!

There are more than 50 exhibits with animals from all over the world. More than 30,000 animals in 2 million gallons of freshwater and saltwater call OdySea “home”. The state-of-the-art facility even has windows in the restroom so you can watch the shark exhibit while you wash your hands! The aquarium also offers unique interactive experiences like Sea Trek Helmet Diving.

Animals on exhibit include penguins, otters, eight species of sharks, sea turtles, piranhas, the giant Pacific octopus and thousands of tropical fish housed in a martini-glass-shaped aquarium. Other attractions include a 10-minute 3D film called “Giants of the Ocean,” a 37-foot touch pool with sea cucumbers and hermit crabs, and a cafe. Arizona residents and tourists think it’s nice to have a place to take the children in the summer when it’s hot, where there are animals too. OdySea Aquarium can accommodate up to 15,000 guests per day, with hopes to attract between 1.8 million and 2 million visitors in the first year.
