There are nearly a dozen trailheads in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve accessing over 120 miles of desert trails throughout more than 30,000 acres. While it is always important to be properly prepared when hiking, it is even more so during the intensely hot summer months!
Before heading out to enjoy the desert, be prepared with these important safety tips:
-Drink water! Don’t wait until you have started hiking, start drinking water two hours before any outdoor activity, continue to drink water for every 15 minutes during your activity. After your activity drink two to three cups for water for each pound of body weight lost.
-Hike when there is the most shade early or late in the day.
-Dress appropriately with proper shoes, clothing, a hat and plenty of sunscreen.
-Let others know where you are going and when you should be back. Carry a cell phone in case of an emergency, but beware that some areas in the desert may not have cell coverage.
-Stay on the designated trails for your safety and the safety of the preserve.
