Out of all the plants you imagine exist in our North Scottsdale desert, can you believe we have one related to the potato? It’s called the Wolfberry, and looks more like a large bush with small leaves. Thanks to the friends at Pinnacle Peak Park, hiking along the trail you’ll find many plants with signs and descriptions of where they’re from, how they grow, and what might eat the berries.
The Wolfberry is a shrub growing up to about 8 feet high. It grows from a large fibrous root system which can extend over 30 feet from the base of the plant. It is a member of the nightshade family, which would make it related to a potato. But the fruit is a red berry less than a centimeter long, which get eaten by birds and other small animals.
