Stevie Nicks is an American singer-songwriter who was best known for her work in Fleetwood Mac as well as her chart topping solo career. Between the two she sold over 140 million records! Nicks was born on May 26th, 1948 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona on to Jess and Barbara Nicks. Her given name is Stephanie Lynn, but as a young toddler, she could only pronounce her name as “tee-dee,” which led to her nickname of “Stevie”. Nicks’s grandfather, Aaron Jess “A.J.” Nicks, Sr., was a struggling country music singer who taught Nicks to sing duets with him by the time she was four years old. Her father’s frequent relocation as an executive meant the family was often moving, living in Phoenix, Albuquerque, El Paso, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Nicks wrote her first song, “I’ve Loved and I’ve Lost, and I’m Sad But Not Blue” with a guitar she received for her 16th birthday. She spent her teen years constantly playing records, and lived in her “own little musical world.” While attending high school in Arcadia, California, Nicks joined her first band, the Changing Times, a folk rock group focused on vocal harmonies.
In 1975 Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac, the band achieved worldwide success with the album Fleetwood Mac. Nicks’s “Rhiannon”, which appeared on the album, was eventually voted as one of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone. Also included on the album was “Landslide”, which achieved over three million airplays and spawned multiple cover versions.
Nicks personal style has remained the same throughout the years and even now she is still wearing the gossamer tunics and shawls that have influenced two generations of Stevie Nicks followers. Nicks has been known for her multiple wardrobe changes during live performances, almost having a new outfit for each song she sang. The cost to keep up her overall style, of hair, makeup, and wardrobe has been reported to be $12,495 for makeup and hairstyling and $43,291 for professional clothing and maintenance!
