Did you know Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America? According to the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) there are over 2.8 million players and a 650% increase since 2013. DC Ranch has a active Pickelball club that meets twice each week at the Desert Camp Community Center. With growing interest in the sport, the DC Ranch club has over 70 resident participants.
The sport is a modified version of tennis that retains its social and strategy skills. It is somewhat of a cross between ping-pong and tennis, played on a badminton-sized court with oversized ping-pong paddles that whack something similar to a Whiffle ball.
The USAPA held its first National Tournament in Phoenix in 2009. ”The growth of Pickleball is exponential. The sport has become a national phenomenon because it attracts players of all ages and abilities. Peope are passionate about Pickleball due to its friendly, social nature and convenient accessibility. Beginners can learn the basic rules in a single session and the sport can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for more experienced player,? Says Lester Tan, Pickelball Director at VICTORIUM in DC Ranch. VICTORIUM offers a free “Intro to Pickleball” class each month. The 30-minute intro is open to people of all ages. The City of Scottsdale has recently retrofitted existing tennis courts to accommodate the interest in playing Pickleball. Courts are available at Thompson Peak Park, Cholla Park and Horizon Park on a first come, first served basis.
